"You Used To Call Me Sadness" (AT) - an Uilab session outtake?

Just found out, thanks to that new hi-res Stereolab discography site, that the rhythm section of Ui (Clem - drums, Wilbo - string bass) appear on the alternate, horn-less studio version of "You Used To Call Me Sadness". So was this piece done during the same sessions that produced the Uilab EP "Fires"?

Curiously enough, Uilab also reworked another Aluminum Tunes piece, "Cadriopo" as "Impulse Rah".

I used to LOVE playing around with the reel to reel. Spacing out at those VU meters. Watch them shits go!

Re:

Cassette culture is huge in the noise/electronic/drone underground (okay, that sounds pretentious...). I have a friend who runs a cassette label for spacey drone music and he makes editions of 100 and they sell out every time.

I'm not really into cassettes anymore personally, but it's nuts how many people in their 20's have embraced it anew (somewhat). Many recent excellent cassettes have gotten reissued on vinyl.

Re:

The first version of YOU USED TO CALL ME SADNESS (the collaboration with UI) was actually recorded a good 2 years before the UILAB project. Therefore it is not an outtake of FIRES.

Re:

Yes and both are "copied" from a 1970 SUN RA track: JOURNEY TO SATURN. I am not even sure if it is the first version that SUN RA made of this track, but this one is available on the cd compilation: SUN RA - THE SINGLES.

Re:

Fires was released in 1998. So that indeed is 2 years later.

But wasn't it already recorded in 1996? I mean, I don't have a physical copy of Fires so I can't check the credits really, but I've seen Tim mention in a 1996 interview about doing a session with Ui.
