The Cure and New Order thread

New Order deserves their own thread (not quite, haha). I want to talk about The Cure in it, too.

The thing about those NO remasters is that the bonus discs don't seem to have an abundance of material that hasn't already been released on CD elsewhere (correct me if I'm wrong).

But I WILL be buying all of the remaining Cure remasters.

Also, I know a lot of people have given up on The Cure but their new album, 4:13 Dream, is going to be really good. I've heard all the songs and it's their best since Wish, and almost as good as Wish (if not better).

There is a New Order-esque song on it called "The Reasons Why" that has a very Peter Hook bass line.

Re: The Cure and New Order thread

I was really into the Cure when I was in high school in the early 90's, but I didn't really like their Wish album. :)

Not sure why, but I don't really listen to them anymore. My favorite band at the time was Siouxsie and the Banshees, but I don't listen to them much these days, either.

Re: The Cure and New Order thread

You know I have never been a big Cure fan. They seemed to pass me by at school. In recent years though I picked up the Greatest Hits and was amazed at how New Order-y some of the songs are, esp the Hook bass sounds. I got the Join The Dots box-set a couple of Christmas's ago and liked it, but have never felt compelled to really seek out the earlier stuff. I always consider buying their LPs in my local 'record n tape exchange' but always seem to find something else that I need first. I will try harder!

Regarding the remastered NO cds (and CD reissues generally)....since upgrading my CD player, amp, speakers and cables earlier this year I have really enjoyed listening to CDs! CDs had no real value to me prior to my upgrading, other than to 'rip'. Now its like rediscovering my collection. There a quite a few of the bonus tracks on the NO cds that I only have on vinyl so its worth it for me to buy them.

Re: The Cure and New Order thread

I used to have a cassette called Happily Ever After, man, I played that thing to death. Now, of course, I realize it contains two albums, Seventeen Seconds on one side and Faith on the other, but at the time, as far as I knew, it was all one album. I recently found Happily Ever After on vinyl and snatched it up quicklike. Easily my favorite Cure material to this day. Tack Carnage Visors on the end, and I'm a happy guy.

New Order, I love everything up to about Botherhood, and frequently revisit.

Cure:

I loved head on the door i remember i was like 7 and saw the video on Much music. My mom went out and bought me the cassette for my birthday. I was insanely happy. I was a weird kid. Mom wouldnt let me tease my hair and make up was out of the question. :D i wore that tape clean thru.

New order:

I remember playing The Best Of New Order in my High School Cafeteria. I used to play it waiting for a ride after school and dance around like a knob.

Re: The Cure and New Order thread

I don't think the Cure have been relevant since Head on the Door. Everything after has always felt bloated and over-produced.

That said, 17 Seconds and Faith remain some of my favorite 80's albums. Carnage Visors is amazing too.

Re: The Cure and New Order thread

I think Kiss Me and Disintegration are great. I think I like what you call the bloated sound--the wild wah-wah guitars all over the place on tracks like "The Kiss."

Wish was still good, though not as good as what came before. Wild Mood Swings was hit or miss. Bloodflowers was on the boring side, and The Cure suffered from very poor production and some bad choices for the track listing.

Since Disintegration there has also been a lyrical decline.

But I think they are heading in a good direction now.

Re: The Cure and New Order thread

For a nice DVD, put "Trilogy" in your Netflix queue. They perform Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers in their entirety. Very nice!

New Order, awesome!
