B like Gary B
Gary B, you have a great sense of humor, always keep it polite and light, and seem to have the wisdom to avoid the hostilities that swarm after one of us kicks a wasp nest (MP3 value, God, Phil Collins, syntax, etc.) here on the forum.
Forget Mike; I gotta learn to be like Gary B.

That I love, I keep.
So YOU'RE the one hogging all the good stuff! Keep what you love most and re-sell the other stuff to spread the love around, huh? :)
I blame Stereolab or whoever made the decision to make so few copies. Whenever something's rare and desired by many, the price will go up. :(
But then again, if it isn't rare, some people don't enjoy it as much, either, so there's a strange balance there. I don't know about you, but I especially treasure something if it's rare and/or expensive.

You get what you pay for, right?

:-)
Some good points, like most things though, rarity is a subjective thing and, in the instance of this item (if we can just objectify it a bit), it isn't rare. The item is rarely seen, yes, but that doesn't make it a rare object, that only makes it scarce (at the moment).
If there are 200 copies in the world, then 199 of them may possibly have better covers than this one. It all depends of course upon the amount that someone is prepared to pay for any item, anything is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it.
In this instance the winning bid may well be astronomical, but it will need to be a bid for keeps because it is unlikely that it will retain its value for Stereolab fans but it may, or may not, retain it for those obsessionals with a fetish for possessing flat round bits of plastic of which only a few in the world exist and, sadly for the fans, that ownership is usually irrespective of the artist or content of that disk.
See, I'm not convinced that Tim & Co fully expected this, sure, it probably started as a bit of fun, perhaps some of it was down to fiscal issues and certainly there was a strong element of putting a finger up at the labels, but I think it all ultimately got out of hand. Think about the 3000 hand done Wow & Flutter, imagine what that did to the 'completists' in the world, poor dears must have had strokes.
As for treasuring something because it's rare or expensive, well I only treasure the people around me.
But then, what do I know, I'm 'full of it', apparently.

Warped
Mine sure is warped. I remember getting it and being quite chuffed that it was warped, just like it says it should be in the discography section.
