Guys ~

Why do you have to get all freakin' serious? Of course I'm not talking about deformed people or people that actually NEED this surgery.

I'm talking about elective. With the exception of a nose job, I think all other surgeries render people freaks.

FREAKS!
Cybele

hehe Most elective plastic surgery you wouldn't even notice, you only notice the extremes and the botched jobs.

Re: Plastic Surgery: Please Help Me Understand

Something that worries me when you mention ethnic groups is the attempt to eliminate racial features. It is disturbing to see African people cutting their noses up, Asians removing the layer of skin so that their eyes do not look "Mongoloid". This seems to indicate some dislike for one's own natural features. I would extend this to seemingly common things like Anglo-saxons getting fake tans or using solariums and the proliferation of braces on every child's teeth. I think this artifice is shallow and misguided.
In a nutshell, the thing that bothers me is the narrowing of acceptable natural features. Whilst I know there was no time in history where perfection was achieved in terms of acceptance of natural features, I am simply saying that I don't like the trend towards surgery to eliminate those features that make us unique.

Re: Plastic Surgery: Please Help Me Understand

I want a world where everyone looks like Jude Law and Uma Thurman. Are you going to deny me even this?!

One of the big regrets of my life is that my parents didn't get me braces when I was a child. Now it's pretty much too late, I've been advised I'm probably going to have major problems. It didn't look so bad, and they wanted to spare me. Braces are usually not just cosmetic, and even if they seem to be, it's to correct something that could cause problems later if your bite isn't quite right. I would say probably you'd be closer to your point if you mentioned making teeth perfect with reshaping and whitening. Braces are to make your teeth straighter and your bite correct.
