I really prefer the live version of Double Rocker to the album version

Seconded! I also like how Julien reinterprets Mary's part during the 2nd half. In fact, I prefer the way Julien sings it (yeah, it's a heresy I know). Not necessarily in terms of voice, but in terms of vocalizing. Not as naive nor twee as on the SD version.

One more point about male vocals. Unlike many, I don't think having a man singing on Stereolab material is tantamount to sacrilege. Stereolab, unlike some harder-core-than-thou fans, aren't exclusivist in their approach. There are at least two instances of male backup in Stereolab's oeuvre:

"Microclimate": backup by Fulton Dingley
"Transporte Sans Bouger": backup by Jean-Baptiste Garnero

And I would not see it as a problem if the next Stereolab's studio session some time in the next decade would give vocal presence for Julien. He can blend in with Laetitia quite well anyway, so one would think it's still Laetitia doing all the voice parts.
