Yesterday I had a conversation with a friend, who is not really awared of music, but who is completely in love with Sonic Youth and related stuff. The problem was that he was 100% sure it's the best band ever and I don't get anything in music. At least I could call The Groop's early stuff against them, but being extra-underrated & unpopular band they could hardly win in that dispute. Being a music jerk-off when I'm only 22 is quite hard, I'm in love with music since I was 13 or something. I listened to The Groop for a first time when Sound Dust came out, or even earlier. Collecting, organizing, listening, safekeeping of cds, mp3s takes a lot of time and power. And I have no idea how to dispute with people about that. I'm truly in love with music, and never set myself up for super cool because of it. I do it just for my own joy. I try not to speak with people about music, but when I meet the person who's just read some shit on pitchfork and tries to prove something instead of accepting the fact that I'm awared a bit more, and well, I actually don't care, is confusing. Moreover, that guy was closely confined, I'm pretty sure he would never listen to the stuff without guitar sound or so on. How do you behave when such jerks want to argue with you? ............................................... I'd say it's 9-1 to The Lab and the Sonic Youth goal courtesy of a blatant handball. (sorry, only football-loving UK folks will get this) |

How can he make his claim without knowing the work of Stereolab? I love Sonic Youth as much as I do Stereolab. They are one of the few bands that have a back catalogue that is as impressive as Sterolabs in terms of size and sustained quality. If you love music, which you do, you need SY in your collection. Start with Confusion Is Sex. Made in 1983 it sounds like it was beamed in from space. Nobody else was making making music like that then, or now! Daydream Nation is hailed as a classic in alt-rock circles, but it is noisy guitars - not really sunshine-pop! The LP I listen to most is Sonic Nurse (2004, I think). It's a great record, chock full of catchy melodies and great drumming - what's not to like?? This time next year you'll be spelling your - yr :) |

well, I've listened to almost everything by Sonic Youth. That's not a question. You propably were confused with the name of the thread, it could be even more hilarious, like Magma vs Oasis. It's all about the people

It sounds like the guy is a bit blinkered. He needs to open his mind and ears to other sounds. You'd be the perfect person to do this! (if you can bring yourself to speak to him).

Beleive you, me, working in a record store we got these douches daily. I think they are the beta male in a musical relationship, so they feel the need to compensate for a lack of control. When their alpha is not around they just go off the handle.
