"champagne" for NYE
I know nothing, but already bought all I'm going to buy for tonight. I would be curious to know however if my cheap-ish champagne choice is terrible or ok. I seem to remember somebody on here is really into the bubbly.
Korbel Natural.

Champers
This is what we're drinking tonight. Hope it's still good, though, as it's been sitting in our not-ideal-for-champagne cabinet for a while now.

Re:
Korbel is like the cheapest crap that I always see in the Jewel grocery store. It's not technically champagne, it's "sparkling wine". Real champagne comes from Champagne, France.
I've had it more than once, but I don't have much experience... I think I've tried one or two other "champagnes".
However, Korbel's apparantly been served at the six most recent United States presidential inaugurations.

Re:
I knew I'd get a response about the "champagne" word, which is why I put it in quotes. California makes some great wine. We don't stop putting the word champagne on the label, so whatever. As for korbel, is all the types made by them total crap or is this just a generalization? This one called "Natural" was rated pretty high from a few sources, so I got this one over quite a few others I could have gotten. Oh well.

I bought mine. It's from Spain. I hope I didn't make a mistake. Some are too sugary. I don't like that. I'm picky I'm a brat I'm sure everything will be fine.

Re:
Crap was just my opinion, and other's that I've heard. I'm sure some like it, and it's not a complete waste. I'd still drink it if I didn't have something else. :)
Let us know what you think.
I think it's bitter & sharp and makes me feel drunk but gives me a bad headache the next morning.
I just got a bottle of Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whisky on sale.

Re:
cuvee eh? I like those. I'm more for the dry varieties myself too.
As far as economical varieties go I recommend Domaine Ste Michelle or Cristalino. I don't like Korbel too much. The effervescence is nice, but it's a bit too appley for me.
A nice $30 option is Piper Heidsieck brut.
Of course you can't go wrong with Veuve Cliquot, Tattinger or Perrier Jouet (I had a bottle of this at xmas). Those are all +$45 though.
Tip: if you want to "class up" a bottle of cheap Cook's champagne add a splash of Hendrick's gin or Stoli Blueberi. Adding frozen berries is good too.
