Did they HAVE to use pics from the movie on the outside?

Yes, that is a crap sleeve. Music's not too great either. Very unsatisfying for a 'Lab-related release.

Peng! probably has the "worst" of the proper releases, IMO.

Overall though Stereolab have great artwork. For sure!

yeah that one's really lame.

Stereolab themselves the other hand has hardly ever had a crap sleeve, at least regarding their full lengths.

Re: Worst Stereolab (or closely related project) album cover/art?

I thought the cover for Sound Dust was kind of off-putting, especially in the context of the general style of all their album covers. I'm ashamed to admit I bought that one last (I bought all the albums in the space of about 6 months a couple of years ago) because of it.

Ah yes, SD is definitely not as great as the other cover arts, I guess I'm not so into the combination of pink and dark green. Although I can see that this cover art is an homage to Polanski.

I thought the cover to Uilab's Fires ep was pretty poor. Could have done so much better.

I dig that Uilab cover. It would probably work better on a Boredoms album or something, but it's still alright by me.

I'm guessing Not Music is the new winner (loser?)

they should have brought back Cliff or something.... anything would have been better

I like the homage to Oronzo De Filippi that was brought to our attention here. BUT it's very poor that it reads "snot music".

How is that an homage to Polanski?

How come somebody complains about the Uilab cover art? That person must have not seen the cover art of the Stereolab/Soi-disant split... That being said, I'm OK even with the cover art of that split, especially when I'm in the mood for minimalism... Otherwise, I only dislike, out of the Stereolab catalogue, those early releases with that character (I read about him, something about being imported from a socialist pamphlet, but I don't remember his name...).

this artwork comes actually from the polanski's "matnia" original movie poster, also known as "cul de sac"

i've been searching that original poster for quite a while, by the way ! :P

i do love that cover, and the writings too, like chalk on board (or simply negative pen on paper...) and those castle details in the booklet (plus with the hessian cover version !)

due to all these particularities, I've searched all the possible versions of SD (the promo one is a nice declinaison, such as the captain easychord cd/vinyl)

there's something really pleasant with CC as well, and the tour 7" & forensic itch 7" fit that album cover pretty well, to my opinion.
