I was reading Pitchfork earlier and saw that she's now taking shots at Lady Gaga and Madonna. This woman shouldn't be throwing stones considering 90% of the people out there would rather listen to sounds of a dying cow.

ah yes, i read that little ditty. i guess she's just as much a provocateur as lady gag and madonna than she realises: she too seems successful in making people 'hopped up' enough to talk out of turn...

I don't think provocateur is a word I would use for Lady gaga. She is too blunt, too blatant. That video for telephone is just cheap porn. It uses all the imagery of porn to sell virgin mobile phones. It is dull and she is dull.

I like how Lady Gaga pisses so many people off. The more people complain about her the more I like her.

I think it's good to get down with some commercial pop music on occasion. It's good for snotty music people like us who tend to be overly critical....a-hem.

To some extent I would agree that you should go with whatever floats your boat as far as enjoyment goes.

I guess my point is that she doesn't really piss me off. Until about 3 months ago I had never heard her songs and I believe I could have continued that way had i not sought it out. My thing is that she is about as provocative as the class clown. She has neither wit nor insight. She is as subversive as a serial killer or mass murderer. She has the philosopical rebellion of a rabid dog. I imagine if I were a parent I would not want my children watching her because I think she is just trash. It is not like Bob Dylan challenging social morality with an alternative philosophy. She challenges social morality with hedonism as an unconscious philosophy rather than an articulated vision.
I think the lack of vision in Madonna has been exposed over time and she too has been shown up as a simple hedonist. As she gyrates around in a leotard at age fifty, desperately cutting her body to remain "beautiful", she has shown herself to be a one trick pony. Rather than proving the claim that she was empowered by sexing it up, that this "provocative" beaviour gave her control over men, time has shown that she was the one enslaved by the public gaze.

I liked her solo stuff a lot, but have to admit, the new album does bore a bit. It's like Sensual World era Kate Bush but boring.

In her defense, she does have a couple of classics -- Book of Right On, Yarn and Glue and is cute as a button. Did someone else say she looks like a gelfling?
