early Stereolab were really really good

No warms up here... no having to 'find' their sound... they were a complete band right from the beginning capable of producing fully realized classics...

in a perfect world where people actually had taste in music Peng33, High Expectations, and Stomach Worm would have been smash hits... what songs from that era are better?

Me too!

Also Doubt, Au Grand Jour (Version), Changer, Orgiastic and Surrealchemist are favourites of mine from those early days.

If you're going all the way up to TRNBWA then don't foget Crest! In fact the whole album :)

yea it is crazy how many good/great songs they have made. absolutely the best band ever in my opinion. never get tired of them ever since the first listen of their sounds.

I wonder if the lab had kept the same band members as originally, would they have changed their sound as much as they did?

Early lab had the tendancy to put me into a trance (almost), with the grinding singular ongoing note(s) in some songs... something that first attracted me to Stereolab as having that type of similarity with the John Cale's influence in the Velvet Underground.

Newer lab kept the insane catchiness with their sound but changed somewhat; it took longer to grow on me, but now it's just as good if not totally different from their old sound. I love both sounds for different reasons, but at least I have something to choose from if I temporarily get tired of one or two of their albums. :)

Well albums of 92 that are better:

PJ Harvey - Dry
Faith No More - Angel Dust
Beastie Boys - Check your head
Ministry - Psalm 69
End of Silence - Rollins Band
They Might be Giants - Apollo 18
Daisy Chainsaw - Eleventeen
99.9 F - Suzanne Vega
Spine of God - Monster Magnet
Ice Cube - The Predator
Tom Waits - Bone machine
REM - Automatic for the People (bar everybody hurts)

And if you were to go era including 1990, 1991,1993 then don't get me started. Stereolab were good then but this was the stuff of the era. Stereolab WERE just finding their feet.
