Really cut away the outer layers and see what someone is made of, at least if you try to find out why they make the decisions they do. Are they greedy and fearful, or generous and hopeful? Do they think the system is fixable, or should be abolished?
Politicians are hard to read because they are actors. You get to know them when they screw up in their personal lives.
