Capital Gate in Abu Dhabi

Capital Gate, a new tower under construction in Abu Dhabi, UAE, leans westward an astonishing 18 degrees (the Leaning Tower of Pisa only leans 4 degrees). Project architects RMJM/Hillier and developer Dubai National Exhibitions are applying to have the building listed as "most inclined in the world.

Re: Capital Gate in Abu Dhabi

Sorry, they got it all wrong. The tower of the old olympic stadium in Montreal is already taller and more inclined than this.

Re: Capital Gate in Abu Dhabi

That is pretty awesome! Technically you are correct with the 175 metre height and the 45 degree angle as compared to the 168 metre and 18 degree angle of Abu Dhabi, however we are comparing apples and oranges. The Capital Gate tilts all the way from its foundation to the top of the building whereas the olympic stadium does not. It is more like the letter Y turned upside down with the vertical leg tilted. Thanks for the info!

Re: Capital Gate in Abu Dhabi

Good point. The capital gate is really a wonderful piece of architecture, fluid and organic. I wish only that more buildings like these could be made. There is too much squares and rectangles everywhere.

However, it would be very hard to agree on which standards to use if we want to name the "most inclined building in the world". Yes, the olympic tower of Montreal may not be inclined from it's foundations, like the capital gate, but it has a much sharper incline overall...

If we think about it, the most inclined building would still be the tower of Pisa, because every single thing in it is tilted (walls, floors, ceilings) from the foundation to the top, while certainly the floors are level in the capital gate and olympic tower...

Re: Capital Gate in Abu Dhabi

The dome support cables which appear to spray out from the underside of the Olympic Tower add a sense of movement and for me begin to emulate a musical instrument. If you could have had access to the cables and given the different lengths of the cables one could have plucked them to hear the variety of resonating sounds.
