hey cyberpainter i am curious about what you do just by your name. because i used to paint with ps and painter quite often. i agree photoshop is far better( if not the most fun) than painter for getting the job done even thought i havent been updated with their latest versions. for those who argue that painter has that painterly look that ps could not provide, i can say that painter's imitation on the traditional medium look is not even close to the real thing, and it is definitely not easier than that as well.

Painter still has it over Photoshop by a long stretch in emulating paint and draw mediums. It's definitely more difficult than just drawing on a piece of paper or canvas, but's a tool that has it's uses. I haven't used it in a few years but in the past the interface was way less intuitive to use than photoshop.

Booklover probably means downloading trials, then getting whatever it needs to convert to a registered copy when the trial is over. Maybe just needs a serial number, but I would be surprised if it's that easy or everyone would be stealing it.

that emulation is really unintuitive and generic compares to real paint. i really have no clue why people like using painter to imitate that oil painting look instead of painting with acrylic or oil and then scan it.

@ cyberpainter That you 'don't generally leave an obvious trail' is not the same as having done so at some point, even if it was only once - or even if it may have been done by someone with the best of intentions on your behalf.

I am relying solely on memory of having seen the site and the reference to PS, I'm not going to hunt down the post, it's here somewhere.

There is a crazy notion amongst many posters suggesting they think they are in the safety of their own livingroom here. The forum, any forum, is open to anyone in the world that can connect to it, be they lab fans, crooks, con-men, the law, authorities anyone. People 'know' this but blinker themselves to it, forums that collect details and have some password to access all content - to read, to post etc - have some protection, but this forum is virtually open.

For someone like me, with a good memory for what I've read, everything on here may just as well have been said to me in a bar or on a train or a bus. It seems that many see the forum as being a deposit for what they think are just toss-away remarks and viewpoints and they believe these will have neither longevity nor content that they have to take responsibility for.

With regard to CS2, I'm amazed that you can state that 'There isn't anything out there that is as good, and I intend to upgrade soon' - the version you are using is 3 years old! You can't talk with any authority over there being anything good or bad unless you have tried CS4 or Corel Painter XI - the brush engine in CS3 alone blitzes CS2's and, especially with a Wacom graphics tablet, buck for buck and pound for pound, Corel's Painter whups PS's behind.

As you are running PSCS2 you will get the 'benefit' of the upgrade pricing to CS5 - because, although it isn't being marketed just yet, past records show that it is due sometime soon, but from a financial viewpoint Painter XI is a more economical and natural option for digital painter/artists.

The latest version of Painter needs a recent machine 12-18 months at best; this gives the relevant 'painterly' look using real time brush strokes.

When 3D printers become widely available, and affordable, digital artists will use Painter and then print a board or canvas with paint colour and textures all in one go.

No, it can't. PirateBay etc will seem like a good option but these downloads may be loaded with date relevant (9/11 for example) timebombs puposely planted by crackers - this may be how your machine 'got the clap' in the first place.

Adobe now have a very strong activation code going - QuarkXpress used to have/has something called Heartbeat that effectively 'phoned home' every now and then and it was only a matter of time befor Quark could check the legitimacy of the software. Adobe has a hidden Service that, if disabled, will not allow starting of the software and when active does the ET thing.

There was a crack that involved formatting and re-installing the OS and the CS suite to stop this from happening but there were a number of things that couldn't be done with the machine unless PS did the ET thing.

The bottom line is, if you are earning a living from something that someone else has to earn a living from, do the decent sensible thing and BUY IT.

I'm not naive or an idiot, I know full well you can find my website. It's just a website, I'm not trying to hide it. I just wondered how you knew about it. It's no big deal. However I've been using Photoshop for many many years, and I love it. I mostly use it for photography. Even CS2 has so many great features, including it's camera raw program. I would never exclusively switch to Painter no matter how new it is and how many new features it has.

The Pirate Bay WAS actually what caused my problem in the first place, so you're right about that.

But as regard to doing the "decent sensible thing", if it were possible, I would, but I simply cannot, so I must pursue other options. I do not have the luxery of considering corporate profit motives over and above concern for my own survival. And THAT'S the bottom line. Thanks for your concern and opinion though.

I wasn't suggesting that you specifically, are naive - but some are, dangerously so.

The problem with CS2 is the version of CRAW it supports, I'm sure that you are aware that it isn't the latest version and if you were to update your DSLR then you would probably need the latest, or at least CS4, to use CRAW.

I personally prefer Lightroom, better DAM than Bridge and more Photo related benefits than Graphics arts benefits - there is a Public Beta 3 to download free of charge, have you tried it?

I'm glad that you have interpreted my concern :-)

WRT Adobe - I have to agree 'bout the corporate part, don't personally give a rat's arse, but the ordinary programers are being laid off left right and centre, as usual management are not the first to suffer - it is the ordinary folk that are being milked then farmed off to Burger King. Consider the wider picture and consequences of your decision.
