Monade, of course. I've already got "A few steps more" and listened to "Socialisme ou barbarie" (is monstre cosmic as good as these? Haven't yet listened to it)

Le futur pompiste. LOL what a funny name isn't it?

Thanks to all of you guys, I'm about to spend some more time on YouTube!

I'll give you my feedback later

a Stereolab fan doesn't like Broadcast?!?!

this makes me doubt that the sky is blue and kitties are cute.

I suspect that if you slowly let it all resonate over time it will eventually happen. Broadcast is a really great band.

I love Broadcast, but I've never felt that they sound much like Stereolab. In fact, the Broadcast fans on their forum are puzzled by that as well.

I agree, it's like lumping Reich and Glass into the same category. They have some similar aesthetic points, but one does not imply the other.

While you're over at YouTube check out the "Stereolab Origins" videos. I've been into Jobim/Gilberto, Morricone, and Kraftwerk after hearing the explicit connections between them and the Groop.

Also, Blonde Redhead, maybe?

They are a joke, blatant Stereolab copyists, they were even dropped by their label...apparently there is not much of a future in being that unoriginal...

I'd say...

Os Mutantes
Joyce (the Brazilian lady with one name)
The Velvet Underground
Can
The Flaming Lips (The newer stuff anyway)
The High Llamas
Madlib (Yesterday's New Quintet, Young Jazz Rebels, Madvillain)
Sun Ra
Miles Davis
Charles Mingus
Pavement

The instrumental hip hop scene is really kicking ass these days. Check out --

Flying Lotus
Gaslamp Killer
Dam-Funk
Dr. Who Dat
and
Oh No
