I thought that might be the criteria but I had to laugh at some of the people in history that I I came up with. You are right, it is fun. Prior to and around the same time as Stereolab we had the mighty Butthole Surfers. They tick all your boxes but I guess not many would associate the two bands. Of course, I like them both. I guess it means anyone could be the heirs to Stereolab. Maybe Bohren und der Club of Gore.
