New Mercury Rev

I just listened to the new Mercury Rev album "Snowflake Midnight". I was ready for this album being completely underwhelming, given how Mercury Rev's previous two albums were a pale shadow of former glories, especially the rather dull "Secret Migration".

Well, I like it. They experiment with electronics on this one and they pull it off. Granted, it's not very innovative and some of the synth/piano sounds are a bit cheesy, but nonetheless it's quite a potent album. No overdone orchestration and Donahue's vocals are less cloying. He even sings a bit lower on some tracks. "Senses on Fire" is a favorite track. It's quite krautrock inspired. I hear a bit of the old Rev noise in the mix too, but it's more polished and controlled and not as overwhelming. If the old Rev sounded like Sonic Youth, then the new Rev album occasionally brings in mind Blonde Redhead's "23".

RYM raters tend to dislike the album, but then the professional critics have written mostly favorable reviews for this album so far. And indeed, I also think this is a good album. Not as great as the first four, but still, Rev hasn't sounded so bold nor exploratory since "See You On the Other Side". A slight return to form.

Re: New Mercury Rev

I just have no excitement about them anymore. Probably won't buy the new one.

Re: New Mercury Rev

So what would you consider the best Mercury Rev album? I've always been curious, but am not sure what a good place to start would be.

I would start with Boces or Yerself is Steam.

Re: New Mercury Rev

To me the first 2 albums sound almost unlistenable.
I would recommend SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE (one could compare it to EMPEROR TOMATO KETCHUP in terms of development and turning point in their discography)and DESERTER'S SONGS (where they reach maturity and a new accomplished style, like SOUND DUST for example).
The new album is not bad (maybe their DOTS & LOOPS for the more electronic approach), but is inferior to the above mentioned.

You probably became a fan later on...I started listening to Mercury Rev with Yerself Is Steam.

The early albums with David Baker are the best, IMO. They lost their edge...I love those epic, noisy songs. Also, loosing Suzanne Thorpe on flute made them less interesting.

Oh, and definitely check out Harmony Rockets: Paralyzed Mind of the Archangel Void.

Re: New Mercury Rev

As LBO alluded to, "Boces" is great. But I also agree with Velvetwater, that "See You On the Other Side" is a great album. "Deserter's Songs" is good if you're more into pop than psych-rock of the first three. I definitely think that the 1993-98 is the classic period. Harmony Rockets is interesting too.

Re: New Mercury Rev

Thanks for the reference to Blonde Redhead. I am listening to their tunes on u tube during today's forum session. Very nice for less experimental music. My only criticism is the ladie's lead vocal could be toned down just a little in the mixes. Misery is a Butterfly and Messanger are pleasant to listen to. Pink Love reminds me of u know who just a little with the spacey overlay of keyboards and vocals on top of the consistant bass and percussion progression.

The lady sings well, she's one of my favorite female singers. I think she's sexy. On the other hand, the male voice is a bit on the "eh" side. Imagine Jonathan Donahue with an Italian accent and you get the idea. :)
