I think that whatever form it takes (and I love your evocation of 'a brain in a jar') it can only increase our understanding of what makes us who we are. What we do to the brain now in the guise of 'therapy' is closer to witchcraft than anything else.
It is not so long ago (still the case in some institutions) that we thought blasting the brain with a (relatively) massive electric charge was a 'cure'. We now know that this is the neurosurgery equivalent of using a 5 megaton nuclear bomb to quell a domestic disturbance.
Already the research is showing us how infinitely complex the mechanisms, and how subtle the effects of external stimuli are. The hope is that the Bluebrain causes a revolution in the way we think about the human condition and safer, smarter and more effective help for people suffering brain disorders.
