It all boils down to infringement of copyright. If you record something off the radio for enjoyment in your car thats's fine, no big deal. If you use the recording as a master and press up 500 records for sale on eBay you'll get your ass charged/sued etc.

Back in the 80s if you taped a record for your friend that was an infringment of copyright. Not stealing, but law-breaking anyway.
