I've been meaning to find a source of words and expressions unique to the British.

I heard a brilliant series of shows on radio a couple of years ago about a bunch of academics who were mapping the UK in terms of the dialects that people speak. Sadly, many British words and dialectal quirks are dying along with the elderly people who use them.

In Scotland, where me and Hobo live, although we write in English, we tend to speak a mixture of English & (Old) Scots. Buying a book of Robert Burns' work would be a good place to start if you wanted to get a flavour of the Scots tongue. You should probably get one with an English translation although, to me, there isn't a great deal of difference.

I'm a Scot that disnae hae muckle, ken!
