The first band I ever saw was The Barron Knights. I was about 10. Somehow it's all been downhill gig-wise ever since then (although I have seen the likes of Frank Zappa, The Beach Boys, Funkadelic, The Clash, Todd Rundgren, The Squeeze, Soft Machine, Earth Wind & Fire, Charlie Mingus, Procol Harum, Madness, Jethro Tull, The Rutles, The Pogues, Ray Davies, Sonny Rollins, Little Feat...).

Good thread. Not sure where the "classic" line begins and "vintage" ends. Here's some: BJ Thomas, Roy Acuff, Barry Manilow, Roedelius, Cluster, Philip Glass, Silver Apples, Iggy & The Stooges, Stevie Wonder, ESG, Siouxie and the Banshees. MC Hammer, Fishbone, Dinosaur Jr., Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, Nine Inch Nails, Ice-T, Public Enemy, Metallica, My Bloody Valentine, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Plastikman, Lush, Sonic Youth.

They don't all have to be geriatric. Someone mentioned Weezer earlier. So save the ridicule. Weezer rock, MR. I agree with you. Classic band! Theyve inspired millions of teeny rockers to pick up an axe, I'd contend. They are quite shite these days though but so are the Stones.

I missed Sonic Youth. I listened to a song from last album last year and I liked it that was first time I'd ever heard them except maybe once in '90's. There's a lot of music catalogues to listen to. You could spend one hundred years or more listening to music and that is good, but I have my preferences.

They're good if you're over 50. lol I like the classics. But, come on. Admit it. You're into flat and boring. That's cool. Just think twice before you talk about tastes. Varied applies to other genres as well. My taste is impeccable. And your response proves you know little to nothing of the history of Fleetwood Mac. Your tastes fits your name-useless and stale. You might as well have said Steely Dan. Saw: Slick Rick Ozzy Missed: McCartney If you can't comprehend why they're legends then this is pointless. Why do you take it personally? Don't be so simple-minded all the time. Pumpkins/NIN are shit. Slick Rick, not classic. Steely Dan are classic. You should just stop responding now, all you are doing is showing you know nothing about music.

I got the point from the second you posted-geriatric. If other people can post Weezer I can too. Taste is relative. So save the judgement.

Like I said in another post, don't take it personally. Unless you are Rivers Cuomo or Billy Corgan, no one is judging you. Weezer is not classic, no matter who thinks they are.

Squirrel M. Nutter wrote: An band/artist who transcends their genre and/or has longevity, is iconic and/or massively influential... So, Nirvana fits, Chuck Leavell/Modest Mouse-not so much. The Velvet Underground/The Stones/The Beatles-yes, The Holy Modal Rounders/The Fugs-no. James Brown-yes, Shuggie Otis-no. I think maybe we have to wait and see about some bands whether or not they are iconic or influential. Sometimes they aren't too popular at the time, but may influence music 20 years later. And I would also say, that if they are greatly popular at the time, there's a good chance I would think they suck. But they still might be "classic". And many on the list don't really transcend a genre, but just might be an iconic example of a genre. In that case I would definitely put X on there. |
