Re: Stereolab at the height of their fame?

I think the element that set the early Groop apart from other noisy rock bands was that whereas most noise-rock bands were squarely guitar-oriented, Stereolab had, since the beginning, used lots of organ and synths; it's the difficulty in telling the difference between the noisy guitar and a distorted organ in their early songs that really set them apart from Sonic Youth, early Mercury Rev etc; that mostly only used guitars.

Later Stereolab was, not sure if better, but certainly different. From some sort of Velvets-inspired noisy rockers into a bizarre and retro pop-jazz-electronica hybrid, it was certainly a change in sound. Albeit the one that still stayed true to their core concept of liberally borrowing from lots of vintage obscuro.
