iPod classic on shuffle

Not that I am uber cool or could even take credit for everything on my iPod but I put it on shuffle today and this is what came out.

My points are:

a. It was a damn fine mix. How does the pod do it so often?
b. It was a great way into my collection. I did not even know half these tracks
c. The Bolan track is Ariel Pink all over
d. Why do the same artists come up so often in short mix? Two stereolab, Two cows, two Frusciante in a row, two Barlow, two Bolan. And note that there are 16473 songs on my pod and around 800 artists. The doubling happens every time.
e. Do it yourself if you want and try to be honest. Post only what you listen to.

1. Like Cockatoos – Cure
2. The Morning After - Michael Kamen
3. Decide – Sebadoh
4. My Bob – Cows
5. Duffy – Boards of Canada
6. Peking Saint – Cat Power
7. Idea Machine – Trans Am
8. Soledad – Pharoah Sanders
9. Daddy Rolling Stone – Marc Bolan
10. Sleet – Shugo Tokumau
11. Kelly – Buffalo Daughter
12. Dondestan – Robert Wyatt
13. Every Artist needs a tragedy – No Age
14. The black Arts – Stereolab
15. Shattered Shine – Crystal Stilts
16. Indian Bells – Madlib
17. North American Scum – LCD soundsystem
18. Icicle Tusk – Fleet Foxes
19. A cold and grey Summer day – Vincent Gallo
20. I’m not Saying – Nico
21. Swimmers – Broken Social Scene
22. Tuareg – Tropicalia
23. Come in to the garden – Nick Drake
24. Sugar Torch – Cows
25. FM Doll – Queen Adreena
26. pon a hill – Tyrannosaurus Rex
27. Roger’s Song – Czars
28. Checking In – Folk Implosion
29. Navajo – Black Lips
30. Another straight Line – BALL
31. Antichrist Television blues – arcade fire
32. Life on the line – Raincoats
33. The young people – belbury poly & moon wiring club
34. Speedy Car – Stereolab
35. The Mirror - John Frusciante
36. Dying – John Frusciante

Re: iPod classic on shuffle

man, I love reading lists. I might post one of these random thingees later on myself.

Speedy Car is a bit much most of the time, but I've found it pretty entertaining when I'm in one of those rare manic/happy moods. kind of rare since I'm pretty laidback most of the time.

Re: iPod classic on shuffle

There was a thing that went around Facebook a while back where everyone went to iTunes and clicked on the iTunes DJ tab then copied out the 15 random tunes that came up from their library.

Just tried it again:
Church Bells And Carillon Classic Sound Effect
laura
Stranger To Himself Sandy Denny
Broken Sleep The Soundcarriers
January Man Rachel Unthank & The Winterset
Too Young Spike Jones
Yeke Yeke Mory Kante
J.S. Bach / Partita no.3 in e Bwv 1006 - Gavotte e Rondo Andres Segovia
Desolation Blues Jackie Leven
DavidB.Danna-EveningStarFromTannhauser1895 (Cylinder recording)
Back In Judy`s Jungle Brian Eno
Space Oddity The Langley Schools Music Project
inn ohm the lake mordant music study series 03: welcome to godalming Ghost Box
Oscar Tango Penguin Cafe Orchestra
Track 01 Edu Lobo

hmmm, some good stuff, some odd - the track called 'laura' is a recording of my niece in a brief interview on local radio - not very rock and roll. I think the less cool the tracks that come up the better.

I did not think it was a bad track and as I was driving a fairly long way, it seemed appropriate. Besides, I'm a sucker for almost anything Mary.

Re: iPod classic on shuffle

Yours is certainly more obscure than mine. Did you give it a listen?
Part of the joy I got from this exercise is that it was like listening to the radio. I didn't pick the tracks, I roughly know most of the albums but I just didn't know what was coming. I remember that facebook thing but the premise seemed to be a bit of a "look at my collection". I liked listening first then looking and typing later.
As I said originally, I don't know how the pod can come up with so many good tracks in some sense of organisation. There are undulations between the sounds and bands but rarely is there a cliff, yawning chasm or sudden drop.

Re: iPod classic on shuffle

That's my 30:

Imitation Electric Piano - Tension
Goldfrapp - Horse Tears
Vashti Bunyan - Glow Worms
Broadcast - Distortion
Nedelle - I hate Mountatin
Radiohead - Myxomatosis
Stelvio Cipriani - Viaggio D'Amore
Haruomi Hosono - Carousel
McCarthy - The Well of Loneliness
Fred Karlin - Blues for Joe
Michel Legrand - Amour, Amour
Pram - Sleepy Sweet
Catharsis - Masq
Massive Attack - Light my Fire (live)
Tim Gane & Sean O'Hagan - Metro, Boulot, Hippo
Mort Garson - Seance
Belle and Sebastian - Mr Richard
Harpers Bizzare - Anything goes
Patten - Love Beams
Cyrkle - Murray the Why
Alessandro Alessandroni - Tema di Londra
Chris Dedrick - Someday
Sven Libaek - Spinifex Hill
Cyrkle - Walter's Riff
Doctor Who Theme
Nora Orlandi - Blood Heaven
Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express
Stereolab - L'Enfer Des Formes
Wanderlea - Eh Pena
Ghost Box - Baroque Face

Strange, I have about 17600 songs and only twenty by Cyrkle, but I got 2 songs by them in a mix. Also there's no Morricone! (I have about 500 tracks by him on iPod)

Yes I did listen - and really enjoyed (although I deleted the Spike Jones track before getting all the way through it). It was such an odd mix of stuff. I was going to say that the shuffle/DJ chose some of the poorer tracks, but it all kind of went together nicely - in a 'Late Junction' way, if you know what I mean.

I tend to burn music I like onto CD and then often delete from iTunes, so the library is not really all my favourite stuff - more like a holding bay for me to (eventually) sort through.

Nice list by the way. Did you enjoy it?
