The debate about the "melting pot" is probably too large for anybody to get right. I think the important thing is that there is a debate. People on this board react very passionately when they see religious elements (mainly of the "christian" variety) interfering with social and political customs; I've never understood why those who practice Islam are to a degree exempted from the same vitriol: it's possible that there is something in the subconscious which incorrectly interchanges religion and race a lot of the time. And of course like Godwin's law it so often goes to the most extreme places, whether it's in the interpretation of the intentions/actions of the "majority" or in the interpretation of the excess/threat by the "minority". It's a painful synthesis.
