I never got the whole Nick Hornby thing either - although he does seem to have decent taste in music. I read High Fidelity and the Fever Pitch and saw the High Fidelity film. His protagonists are so wet. I never saw About A Boy, but might now if it comes on the telly again. (My dislike go NH might be partially anti-Woolwich Wanderers bias I admit)
