The Turkish filmmaker moves away from the minimalist explorations of the lives of rural-born intellectuals to investigate a plot that could easily leap off the page of a pulpish crime thriller. Ceylan is a director who can find the blackest of humour in the darkest of corners and can pinpoint the subtlest of gestures in the most melodramatic of stories. His fifth feature which won Best Director at Cannes, is his most mainstream yet. This is cinema that requires patience and attention, but the rewards are many.
