Well, the early Lab is probably one of the best bands ever inspired by the V.U., "Femme Fatale" is certainly a precursor to some of the softer dreamier early Lab tunes.

I think one of the big differences with early Lab is that their other numerous influences were also fairly immediately obvious, so it kind of tempered the VU thing. It wasn't like with the JAMC, where it was pretty much VU meets Stooges and nothing else to write home about.

that's so true. stereolab really mixed it up and made it their own. and it was because of VU references in Stereolab magazine articles and reviews that I heard about VU. but in all honesty, it's (early) stereolab that hits the turntable more often than any VU record.
