Why wouldn't an artist sell their own stuff on MP3 or FLAC from their website these days? Is it hard?

I agree....surely this would be a more lucrative road for bands to go down? I guess iTunes is just so commonly used it has the biggest potential audience, and therefore a monopoly. But there is so much stuff on it, I doubt if people really "browse" at random (rather than searching directly for something they want)? Bandcamp seems to be quite a popular means of distribution these days, not sure how the margins are for artists there though.
