a lot of the string arrangements on the album remind me of Jean-Claude Vannier's string arrangements on Gainsbourg's Histoire de Melody Nelson

The best track I've heard from Radiohead is "How to disappear completely". It's super gloomy, and I find it surprisingly affecting (considering on the whole I can't stand them). The strings in that one I'd say are cribbed from Scott Walker's timeless classic "It's raining today".
