Soundcarriers are very good. I don't think they're copying or cloning Stereolab at all, not that you suggested that.

The High Llamas are still great. The last album was fairly slight, but I think that's because it was just a soundtrack to a play I've never seen. Hopefully they don't plan on calling it a day anytime soon.

Re: where did all the good bands go?

I guess the 'new' bands I've been listening to are: Parquet Courts, No Age, Best Coast (first album only), Savages, Tame Impala, Courtney Barnett... that's all I can think of.
I don't really like bands that 'copy' the 'Lab, why bother?
But I must say if I like a 'soundalike' band, it's the Pavement-esque side of things I enjoy.
I'm more than happy ploughing the great back catalogue of history of music rather than listening to 'new' stuff.

Re: where did all the good bands go?

I am not sure what you are looking for but there are plenty of good bands and things that sound somewhat like stereolab: Moon Duo and Wooden Shjips have musical similarities, Cate Le Bon, Jane Weaver, Lambchop, Psychic Ills, Julie Holter, Shilpa Ray, Ought, Houndstooth, Ulrika Spacek, chris cohen, Weyes Blood, Arc Iris.
Get yourself a spotify account (and pay for the premium one), play some music that you like and they'll send you thirty songs every week that they think you'll like. You're bound to like some of them.

Re: where did all the good bands go?

Funnily, I was driving to work and they were talking about independent Chinese bands touring Austrlia. They played this song and I could see a bit of Stereolab there.

I would also recommend this radio station

https://www.pbsfm.org.au/

as they have heaps of great music.

This is pretty amazing too

Hear music from all over the world

Add to that that if you use spotify or bandcamp, they usually have links to similar artists.

There is no excuse for saying nothing is happening. Maybe nothing good is on pitchfork or at the big alternative festivals or the "indie" section on spotify and even one of my favourite stations is playing a lot of rubbish these days (but still has some good stuff) http://www.rrr.org.au/ but there are great things happening all over the world. Listen to Africa, Asia. Check out the small guys. The mainstream alternative just likes slick hairdressers but don't let it get you down. There is rock, pop and jazz (all stages of Stereolab) and so much more.

Re: where did all the good bands go?

Hello my friend, i think all the good bands and artisc come from good, i mean they are born to be, so while they growing they find themselfs in music or other branch and they become famous!
