大貫妙子 Taeko Ōnuki - Romantique (1980)

This is a fantastic record!

So is this, no wonder with music arranged by the great Ryuichi Sakamoto:

I can tell I'm gonna have a lot of fun exploring this "City Pop" genre :D As much as some aspects of it get on people's nerves, no one can deny that youtube is a wondrous thing for enabling this kind of cultural research :)

Re: 大貫妙子 Taeko Ōnuki - Romantique (1980)

Welcome to the forum greencrayon. Indeed, YMO and related projects are cool. Lots to explore there! :)

I came across Taeko Ōnuki just recently when I became a bit obsessed with Perfume, and was looking for similar jpop. Unfortunately nothing else I heard from current times was hitting the mark, so I did the sensible thing and looked to the past :D

I'm really enjoying her "Sunshower" album, very nice. It has that Steely Dan kind of smooth jazz feel, mixed with some groovy disco parts and Moog flourishes. I love the sound of Japanese language, especially female vocals. So an instant classic for me (from 1977)! Maybe these tracks are interesting for groop fans:

This outro track "Giraffe Landscapes" by Rajie is so nice :D

真鍋ちえみ - うんととおく is just the best I found so far though. Everything about this track is crazy. Even the sleeve!
